Research- Jee-Ook Choi

Jee-ook Choi is a Korean illustrator that has great talent in creating lines and mood. I like about the color in her work that gives me the harmony, and the most attractive point I have about her work is the texture in her work. The strong paper texture in the work gives me new idea about my work. What’s more, she uses not only the normal texture but also the beautiful element as the element such as trees and net. It gives the illustration more energy.

In her works for Bucheon International Fantasitci Film Festival, her imagination combines with the real life well. The structure of the posters builds up by lines and color. She likes to use the lines to do the shape and structure. The people create a round line in the image. The gusrdrails that around the painting point up to the big 20. It's cool that she shows strong abtarct element and skills of graphic design. It reminds me of an idea that there's no doundries between art areas. She also shows strong narrative telling in her work, that shows she is a good illustrator. It's clear that her story is about people playing around the pool. She doesn't show a pool in usual perspective. She separates the elements of the story and puts around the big number object. However, she doesn't forget to bring perspectives into her works. The background trees in different colors show different environments. The people in seversl angles also bring the perspectives.

Color use in her work is attractive. It's like the combination of both modern style and retro. It brings me the feeling of still and peace. I like it. Although she is using digital media to do the painting, I can still feel strong hand drawing style. I think it's because of the watercolor texture in her works( I am not sure about this). The texture is less rough that the usual paper texture that only shows the water colors blooming in the water. It gives me the feeling of smooth. I mention in the previous paragraph that she separates the things in the storytelling. She uses those things as design elements and also the texture. Those repeating texture in her works is impressive.

She shows different style in these works. In works that don't have strong narrative telling, she draws things in abstract way. It's little less attractive than the paintings of real life thing. I like the lines and strange shape of heart that show her painting style clearly. The perspective is clear and attractive in her works.

Progree Work on Twitter

I really like her progress works on Twitter. It shows her thoghtful idea on developing her style in different ways. In this painting, she combines her style with kind of Japanese Ukiyoe art style that draws a lovely moving cat. She is not stuck by usual Ukiyoe style or the texture of printmaking. However, the movement and structure show strong style, shich makes her painting more sttractive. She is actually learning from different styles to enrich herself.
